Sandburg Board Receives Comments On Children’s School

Kid's BlocksThe Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees heard concerns about the recently announced closing of the college’s Children’s School.

Sandburg announced the closure in a press release where 13 employees are anticipated to be relieved of their positions once the Spring semester ends in June.
During last night’s meeting, one individual spoke on behalf of a group of those concerned.

The Children’s School opened in 1977 as a lab school for students in child development and nanny programs, but both programs are now non-existent..

College President Lori Sundberg tells WGIL that these types of decisions are never easy.

“We know the Children’s School has been beloved in our community and we, of course, feel terrible that we’re not going to be able to go forward with it,” says Sundberg. “At the same time, we have an obligation to our mission and we have an obligation to other academic programs that we do not let something like this take away resources from other areas.”

Sundberg says the college has taken a $750-thousand loss on the school over the last seven years due to low enrollment, among other things.

The College’s Board of Trustees took no action due to the school being a clinical site.
