Housing Authority Goes Smoke Free

smokefreeAs of April first residents and visitors of Knox County Public Housing will have to comply with a new smoke-free campus policy.

The Knox County Housing Authority Board discussed the matter back in May of 2013 and over the last several months the Housing Authority has been working to get resident reaction.

Knox County Housing Authority Executive Director Derek Antoine told the board of commissioners he hasn’t heard from any residents that they have an issue with the policy.

However, Commissioner and Moon Towers residents Dale Parsons told Antoine he feels this new policy violates residents rights.

“As I told you all last month, I’ll go along with the policy here, but I still think the residents, especially here at Moon have got it shoved down their throat just before there’s going to be a rent increase,” says Parsons. “It seems like we have no voice, it’s the way it’s going to be and to hell with the residents.”

Parsons, who passed on the vote, said he believes this should be a option of residents not a requirement.

The measure was passed with five yes votes and one abstention.
