A Galesburg woman accused of essentially stealing money from the law office she worked at now has new charges filed against her.
36-year-old Jennifer Brown appeared in Knox County Circuit Court this morning — her first appearance with Public Defender Karl Johnson, and Chuck Zalar as special prosecutor.
Zalar filed new charges during the hearing. Instead of two felony theft charges, Brown now faces two felony charges of Theft Between $10-thousand and $100-thousand, and four counts of forgery.
Brown turned herself in to authorities in December, after a warrant was issued for her arrest.
At the time, prosecutors said, Brown allegedly wrote $8,500 in fraudulent checks to an account she had access to through her employer, Kimberly Norton’s law office.
Brown wrote the checks to herself, but vendors were believed to be found on the check stubs.
Discrepancies were then noticed after a routine check of the accounts.
Brown is not in custody after posting bond. She’s next scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 4th.
