Car and United School Bus Collide

UPDATED 2:22pm  The winter storm that has seemed to deal more snow than anticipated has also dealt an accident involving a car and a school bus.

State Police in Macomb say the accident happened around 7:20 Friday morning on U.S. 67 north of 210th Avenue outside of Monmouth.

Troopers say a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville driven by 21-year-old Caitlin Volz lost control on the snow-covered roadway while headed northbound, sliding into the front of the United School District Bus, and eventually spinning into a ditch.

Volz had to be extricated from the vehicle. Volz and three of the children on the bus were treated for minor injuries and released from OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards says the remaining 22 students on the bus were taken to United High School on another bus. One of them later complained of head injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

Troopers say Volz was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. Both Volz and the bus driver were believed to be wearing their seat belts.

Local and state police have responded to a number of fender-benders and other accidents throughout the day in the area. None, however, are believed to be serious.
