Chicago-Area Ukrainians Protest Kiev Violence

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago-area Ukrainians are calling for U.S. sanctions against the former Soviet Republic after deadly violence erupted in the capital of Kiev.

About 100 people demonstrated outside the Ukrainian consulate in Chicago on Wednesday, carrying signs and flags and chanting “Obama Act Now!”

Pavlo Bandrisky is vice president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America’s Illinois division. He says it’s time for Ukraine’s president to resign, but he fears more bloodshed.

Clashes on Tuesday left 25 people dead in the worst violence in nearly three months of anti-government protests in Ukraine’s capital. Protests began after the president backed away from a deal to join the European Union in favor of closer ties to Russia.

Protesters say this is a historical moment, and the crackdown will only energize them.
