Suburban Chicago Zoo Wants Help Naming Baby Gorilla

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago zoo is asking for the public’s help in naming a newborn gorilla.

Brookfield Zoo officials said in a news release Tuesday the female lowland gorilla was born in November. They say the infant is starting to develop a personality, is vocalizing more and has started teething. But she still needs a name.

The zoo has narrowed the list of possibilities to four, and is inviting the public to vote for their favorite on the zoo website.

The options are: Amila, a river in the Republic of Congo, where lowland gorillas are native; Amelia, which means “industrious leader;” Emma, after gorilla researcher Emma Stokes and Nora, which means “honor” or “light.”

The winning name will be announced March 4, when the gorilla will turn 4 months old.
