The resignation of Bill Butts shortly after signing an intergovernmental agreement with Knox County left the spot open.
The Election Commission has, since then, been preparing for the March 18th primary election; previously expecting only two election commissioners.
State statute requires a replacement be appointed within 60 days of the vacancy. Chief Judge James Stewart, has now appointed Veronica Peoples.
Election Commission Executive Director Lisa Watson tells WGIL that her appointment is fantastic timing.
“It’s very beneficial, because she has been a part of the election process in the past,” Watson said. “The election terminology is very specific, so it’s a real benefit that she’s been serving the community in that capacity for such a long time.”
The Election Commission office provided a list of potential candidates for Judge Stewart to consider.
Peoples is a lifelong resident of Galesburg, even graduating from Galesburg High School.
In addition to her new Election Commission work, Peoples also serves on the Board of Habitat for Humanity.
