Altercation Leads to Arrest in Pipe Beating

IL-GalesburgPDGalesburg Police became convinced that information received in a Tuesday afternoon incident was untrue, leading to a slightly different arrest than anticipated.

Officers responded to the rear parking lot of Hy-Vee on National Boulevard just after 4:30 p.m. to a report of a fight in progress.

Once on scene, 28-year-old Jack Legg allegedly told officers that three different individuals had slashed his tires with what he described as a “Rambo” knife.

Legg was transported to the Public Safety building for further questioning. One of the individuals initially suspected of slashing Legg’s tires was picked up by police after they were informed Legg knew the individual through his girlfriend.

A nearly two foot metal pipe was taken as evidence in the altercation, but the suspect claimed that Legg entered the parking lot with a pipe in his hand prior to the incident.

Police inspected the tires on Legg’s car after the suspect claimed Legg had allegedly driven over a curb, accounting for the damage to his tire.

Officers did not locate slash marks on the tire upon inspection. The suspect also said he was hit with the metal pipe when trying to protect the other two individuals accused of slashing the tires.

Only minor injuries were suffered in the altercation. With the new information, Legg was arrested and is being charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery with a weapon, and criminal damage to property.
