Chicago Officials Say Ness Undeserving Of Honor

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago aldermen are taking a shot at famed Chicago crime fighter Eliot Ness.

A City Council committee held a hearing Friday focusing on events that played out 80 years ago. It voted to send to the full council a resolution urging the U.S. Senate to abandon a proposal to name the federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives headquarters in Washington, D.C. after Ness.

The hearing included testimony from retired IRS agents, who told of how Ness had nothing to do with the income tax evasion charges that landed Al Capone in federal prison.

The retired agents say that Ness had a fine career. But they say other agents, many of whom were killed in the line of duty, deserve the honor of naming a building after them more than Ness.
