Former Ag Secretary Shares Thoughts On Agriculture in Galesburg

2-27-14 John BlockThoughts on the state of agriculture were shared during last night’s Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.

The Lincoln Room at Knox College played host to former Secretary of Agriculture John Block – who was the keynote speaker during last night’s event.

Block served in the Reagan Administration and told his account of how a pig farmer from Illinois was appointed to the post.

The Galesburg native recalled meeting with Reagan prior to his appointment and says they spent two hours discussing their philosophy of government as well as agriculture.

Commenting on several issues of national importance last night, Block says the five-year farm bill recently approved by Congress is still too complicated.

“It’s not going to solve everything, the Farm Bill, but it’s not supposed to,” Block said.  “We have to take risks like all of you guys.  Everybody takes risks.  I think it’s a good bill in a lot of ways, but I still think it’s too complicated, and we need to move forward and away from government.”

He also said dollars should be expended to improve the nation’s locks and dams.

Block served as Illinois State Agriculture Director earlier in his career and has since served on the Board of Directors for several different agriculture companies.
