Continuance in Case of Man Charged in Fatal Shooting Death

hortonOne of the men charged by a grand jury in connection with a fatal shooting in Galesburg back in late-December will not go to trial this month.

Knox County Circuit Court records indicate 18-year-old Alex Horton was granted a continuance requested by his public defender, Karl Johnson, during a pre-trial hearing yesterday.  Horton faces charges including Possession of a Weapon by a Street Gang Member, and Possession of a Weapon Without a Firearm Owners I.D. card.

He and 18-year-old Brandon Kenney were arrested back in January — several weeks after the fatal shooting in the six-hundred block of Monmouth Boulevard December 22nd.  15-year-old Javon Butler was found in a back yard there and pronounced dead at the scene.

Continuances are common in the early stages of a criminal case. Horton could now go to trial as soon as mid-May.

Kenney, meanwhile, is scheduled to make his first pre-trial hearing in April.  He faces murder and weapons charges, among others.
