Students may be switching schools if a discussion leads to a proposal by the Galesburg Board of Education.

During tonight’s school board meeting, instituting grade centers will be discussed as a way to save on costs.

Due to funding cuts from the State of Illinois, the Board of Education could designate schools by specific grade levels as opposed to neighborhood.

According to District documents, the idea is being presented due to a slowdown in construction of the Master Facilities projects.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations David Black tells WGIL that he doesn’t believe their schools can handle any new arrangements.

“It’s not a recommendation by the administration to go forward with anything like that,” Black said.  “But, we’re just having a discussion on it at this point.”

The discussion was brought forward by a current school board member as well as former interim Superintendent Peter Flynn.  Flynn had experience with grade centers while he was the Superintendent of the Freeport School District.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.
