PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Joshuan McNeal scored 17 points and Tevin King had 16 as Providence St. Mel beat PORTA 71-36 in the third-place game of the IHSA boys basketball Class 2A state tournament on Saturday.
The Knights (26-7) led from start to finish and were never challenged by the Bluejays (26-7). St. Mel took advantage of 19 PORTA turnovers, scoring 29 off those miscues. Carl Garner added 12 points.
After jumping out to an early lead, 13-4 after one quarter and 29-16 at half, the Knights kept the pressure on and never let PORTA get closer than 15.
PORTA’s Nic Sinclair led the Bluejays with 13 points. PORTA shot just 23.6 percent from the field, while Providence St. Mel made 28 of its 50 shots (56 percent). Nate Hopper added 11 for PORTA.
