IL Makes Last Push for Health Insurance Sign-Up

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois officials are making a final push to enroll residents in the state’s Health Insurance Marketplace.

Most people who don’t have health insurance have until midnight Monday to enroll or else they’ll face federal tax penalties under the Affordable Care Act.

Low- and middle-income Americans can get subsidies to help buy policies through the exchanges.

At Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago, more than a dozen people were in line before 8 a.m. Monday, hoping to enroll. Thirty-eight-year-old Manuel Gonzalez says he decided to enroll because the small, family-owned chrome plating company where he works doesn’t offer insurance.

Gonzalez says it’s been “scary” being without coverage given how expensive health care costs are.

Enrollment counselors are available until midnight at events around the state.
