Job seekers and potential employers gather at Carl Sandburg College’s Twenty-Third Annual Career Expo.
One of those employers, Burlington Northern Santa Fe is looking at adding five hundred positions regionally and five thousand nationally.Hannah Stadheim, HR Director for the BNSF’s Chicago Division, says there are various job openings including track maintenance workers, machinists, welders and conductors.
Stadheim tells WGIL the railroad company provides training for the positions because there are certifications that must be obtained.
“Nobody’s been a conductor before, nobody that we hire has worked on a locomotive more than likely, so we have all the training they need. But we have to have those people that have the drive because it is a lot of information to learn and there’s usually a test at the end to be a certified conductor.”
BNSF was not the only company looking to hire new employees at the event. Around seventy recruiters from various companies had booths at the event.
These included career opportunities in health care, civil service, retail, and insurance.
