PONTIAC, Ill. (AP)–A U.S. Navy veteran from Pontiac wants to put up a monument to honor Livingston County residents who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.Chris Studebaker says he’s about $5,000 shy of his fundraising goal of $15,000 for the project.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports that the county board has approved a location alongside the Livingston County Courthouse and near monuments for earlier wars.
The monument would include two square blocks on each side, which Studebaker says are meant to evoke the image of the Twin Towers destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001.
The more than 12-year war in Afghanistan is the longest in American history, and the Iraq war lasted more than eight years. Studebaker says he “decided it’s time those veterans have their own monument.”
