SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP)–The Illinois Department of Transportation has suspended all non-emergency roadwork over the Easter holiday weekend to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. The stoppage began Friday and continues through Sunday evening.
Department officials say they will open lanes where possible through midnight Sunday. But some construction zones will have lane closures in effect, depending on the projects.
Work zone speed limits of 45 and 55 mph are still in effect where signs are posted even if workers are not present. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375 for a first offense and $1,000 for a second offense.
On top of February being American Heart Month, today is national Wear Red Day.
