House Fire In Vacant Structure Prompts Investigation

South FireGalesburg Firefighters responded to the scene of a structure fire in the 700 block of West South Street, Tuesday night.

The residence was fully involved as crews arrived on scene within minutes of the 9:50 p.m. call. Fire heavily damaged the sides and rear of the house, leading Fire Chief Tom Simkins to believe the house is a total loss.

He tells WGIL that because the structure was vacant at the time of the fire, they’ll be conducting a thorough investigation.

“Our investigators are here, we called them in right away knowing we had a fully involved house fire in a vacant structure,” says Simkins.

Galesburg has seen at least two fires involving vacant structures in recent weeks – something Simkins has called a “red flag” in the past. In Tuesday night’s incident, firefighters spent more than an hour trying to get the flames under control.

No injuries were reported.
