Twice-fired Police Chief Charged With Battery

CASEYVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A southwestern Illinois police chief has been charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and battery for his actions during a village board meeting.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez allegedly made threatening gestures and stalked about the room during a meeting of the Caseyville Village Board on Feb. 19. Illinois State Police also say Alvarez chest-bumped Caseyville Police Sgt. Frank Moore during the meeting.

Telephone calls Thursday to Alvarez for comment weren’t immediately returned.

Caseyville Mayor Leonard Black fired Alvarez twice in February, saying he wanted to take a different direction with the police department. Despite his alleged outburst, the village board unanimously voted to reinstate Alvarez.

The 61-year-old Alvarez of Smithton was hired in September to replace J.D. Roth, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
