Galesburg Housing Stock in Question

galesburgGalesburg’s housing supply will be in question during a special meeting of the Galesburg City Council, tonight.

As part of the City’s goal setting efforts last year, the quantity and quality of housing was identified as crucial for growing Galesburg’s population.

The City’s Community Development Department says there has been a 42-percent increase in vacant housing units between 2000 and 2010.

According to City documents, the quality of Galesburg’s housing stock has an effect on the position of the City as a desirable place to live and do business.

Funding sources for renovating historic houses, buying vacant houses, and incentivizing the development of residential neighborhoods will also be sought.

Aldermen are expected tonight to provide City staff with the direction to conduct a comprehensive housing analysis.

In addition, a housing committee for the City may also be recommended to aid in the development process.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 5:30 at Galesburg City Hall.
