Abingdon City Council Appoints New Police Chief

Abingdon aldermen were caught off guard during Monday night’s City Council meeting when they were asked to approve the resignation of Police Chief Jerry Roberts.

Roberts has been with the Abingdon Police Department both part-time and full-time since 2001 taking on the role of Chief in 2012.

Mayor John DeJaynes says he had some idea his resignation was coming, but he tells WGIL the official letter of resignation was still a shock.

“He found a different job and took that, I knew about it a month ago so it’s something we’ve been building up to, but it did initially come as a surprise,” says DeJaynes.

DeJaynes says since it was the night to make appointments as aldermen decided to appoint officer Kenneth Jones as Chief of Police and he says it’s a direct promotion.

“He was the acting police chief, he was our corporal before, but he’s just getting moved up the ladder,” says DeJaynes.

Robert’s resignation was effective April 25th.

Aldermen also made a final decision on the wheel tax sticker voting 4-3 in favor of the ordinance.
