Hagel to Outline US Defense Priorities

CHICAGO (AP)–U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will lay out his vision for the future of the nation’s military at a speech in Chicago.

Tuesday’s address at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs will be his third speech on new strategic priorities as the armed forces pivot from a 13-year war footing and come under enormous budgetary constraints.

The U.S. and its NATO allies are to withdraw their combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of this year.

The former Republican senator from Nebraska and Vietnam combat veteran took office in February 2013.

Since then, Hagel has been intent on finding a way to adapt defense priorities to the reality of budget cuts.

In earlier speeches, Hagel said changes could include a stronger focus on cyber technology and missile defense.
