Peoria Police Officer Hit With Child Porn Charges

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A Peoria police officer acquitted in March of sexually assaulting a woman is now facing child pornography charges.

The Journal Star in Peoria reports John McCavitt is free on $5,000 bond on seven counts of aggravated child pornography and three counts of possession of child porn. Authorities say illicit images were found while Peoria police were investigating an alleged sexual assault.

Attorney Kevin Sullivan says McCavitt denies the charges. State’s Attorney Jerry Brady declined to comment.

The pornography charges, as well as separate charges of unauthorized videotaping for the alleged 2013 recording of a woman, resulted from an investigation by the Peoria Police Department.

The department waited until the conclusion of the criminal case against McCavitt before conducting its own investigation.
McCavitt was placed on unpaid leave Monday.
