State Board to Detail Local Impact of Funding Bill

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois State Board of Education is expected to detail the local impact of a new school funding proposal.

State board of education spokesman Matt Vanover said Tuesday the board on Wednesday “may be able to provide State Sen. Andy Manar with preliminary information.”

Manar is a Bunker Hill Democrat and the author of legislation that would streamline the state’s school funding formula by requiring districts to demonstrate need before receiving money.

The current school funding method has been in effect since 1997. It factors in a district’s poverty for some types of state aid but not others.

Republican critics say they’re still not sold on the proposal until they receive more details on how specific school districts across the state would be impacted.
