Engineering Services Approved For Depot Upgrades

Plans for making upgrades to the North portico at the Galesburg Amtrak Depot can move forward.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night approved additional engineering services for the work. The City has been working to make upgrades to the South portico with funding given by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

$5-thousand from IDOT will now be used for architectural and engineering services on the North portico.

Community Development Director Roy Parkin says the City has one final approval after signing off on the “60-percent drawings.”

“The next request is to submit a pre-bid approval so we can approve all the plans and specs so we can bid it out,” says Parkin. “That should be going in this week to the IDOT finalizing everything and this is for both the transit maintenance facility as well as the Amtrak, we’re trying to work those in tandem.”

The changes would build enclosures and add more space for vendors and baggage storage. Parkin says that with grant projects such as this, IDOT approval is needed at nearly every turn.

Work to the North portico could begin as soon as this fall.
