Congresswoman Spends Mother’s Day in Afghanistan

Bustos picCongresswoman Cheri Bustos says it was a great honor to be able to spend the Mother’s Day weekend overseas with some of our men and women in uniform — but in this case, especially the women.

The 17th District Democrat was part of a bi-partisan delegation of female Congresswomen who made the trip to Afghanistan over Mother’s Day, where she says she brought Mother’s Day cards from a Quad Cities elementary school to them.

Bustos tells WGIL the trip, for her, was quite moving.

“We wanted to make sure that they knew we were grateful for everything that they’ve done,” says Bustos. “I have to say I was very proud to be able to spend my Mother’s Day with them, my kids are grown and a lot of these women have little kids still at home who are missing their moms and they’re missing their kids, so it’s nice that we were able to spend time with them.”

Bustos says while the situation for women U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan is good, the same can’t be said for Afghanistan women. She says while conditions are slowly improving, many still can’t get the education or lives they want, and many still fear the Taliban.

That said, Bustos believes the U.S. troop drawdown there is working well.
