Ceremony to Mark D-Day at Springfield Cemetery

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP)–A ceremony is planned at Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery to mark the 70th anniversary of the World War II D-Day invasion at Normandy, France.

Friday’s ceremony at the cemetery’s World War II Memorial is one of scores across the United States to commemorate the June 6, 1944 invasion that helped change the course of the war.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency says the event will include re-enactors in World War II uniforms, patriotic music and a rifle salute by the Sangamon County Inter-veterans Burial Detail.

The ceremony is sponsored by the World War II Illinois Veterans Memorial Committee.
