Galesburg Liquor Advisory Commission Moves Cafe Ordinance Forward

Sidewalk cafes could be popping up around the downtown area thanks to a new cafe ordinance crafted by the Liquor Advisory Commission.
During today’s meeting commission members heard about the new ordinance drafted by Commissioner Adam Vitale.
Vitale told the commission he’d looked at other ordinances from Monmouth, Champaign and Chicago in an effort to craft Galesburg’s ordinance.
He explained the ordinance really outlines who can and cannot have permit for a sidewalk cafe.

“The establishment needs to have 50% of its revenue from the sale of food, so a sidewalk cafe would not convey with someone with a tavern license, it is intended for food and drink.”

Commissioners were very receptive to the ordinance they were presented with, however, Commissioner Diane Eager did express her concerns with the possible alcohol advertisements plastered on barricades separating the cafe section from the rest of the sidewalk.
Eager says it’s something children do not need to be exposed to. But the new cafe ordinance does not require barricades and commissioners told Eager that should cut down on the possibility of advertising.
