Passing the Torch for Special Olympics

DCIM100GOPROGalesburg Police officers are once again helping local athletes get their own special weekend started.

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run is taking place this week, ahead of the annual Special Olympics Illinois games this weekend in Normal.

Yesterday, Galesburg Police officers received the torch from officers from Moline and the Quad Cities, who ran U.S. 150 to Galesburg 6-11-14 Torch Run 2yesterday. Galesburg Police among others, in turn, will run the torch to the Peoria County line.

Special Olympics area director Cathy Betar tells WGIL local support is sending a lot of local athletes to the state games.

“We have 150 athletes going from this area down to State this weekend,” Betar said.  “We’ll have a variety of medals brought home.  But, all these athletes will have gotten a gold medal at the area competition.  And, then, they get to go on to State and participate, and it’s a big deal for them.”

Two athletes from the Galesburg area, along with one from Milan which is also in this Special Olympics region, will travel this weekend to the national Special Olympics games in New Jersey.

Betar says that’s a huge accomplishment.
