Galesburg Police were advised of a one-vehicle crash just before 9:45, Tuesday night.
Officers responded to the area of North Seminary and East Fremont Streets where they located a damaged vehicle.
By the time police were on scene, the Galesburg Fire Department had one of the vehicle passengers on a stretcher and were attempting to extricate the driver.
While investigating, officers noticed a can of ultraduster and when searching for insurance and registration, found another can.
The driver of the vehicle – identified as 18-year-old Cody Barker – allegedly told police that he and the vehicle passengers had stolen the cans from a local Wal-Mart.
The vehicle passengers have since denied the claims made by Barker to police about stealing the ultraduster.
According to the police report, Barker allegedly said he took a “hit” from the ultraduster and the next thing he remembered was being addressed by fire perssonnel.
Police say they believe the vehicle hit a curb which subsequently led the vehicle to strike a tree.
No alcohol was present, although staff at a local hospital say Barker’s urine tested positive for cannabis. Barker allegedly said he had smoked cannabis several days prior to the accident.
While one of the passengers did not require medical treatment, the other passenger received 30 staples.
Barker is facing charges of Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, and Failure to Reduce Speed.
