Nonprofit Launched in Name of Teen Murder Victim

CHICAGO (AP) — The parents of Hadiya Pendleton, the high school student gunned down in a Chicago park last year, have formed a nonprofit organization to combat gun violence across the nation.

Parents Cleopatra and Nathanial Pendleton say Hadiya’s Promise will honor the 15-year-old’s life and provide children with opportunities to steer them away from fights.

Executive director Angela Rudolph says young people are carrying guns because they don’t value life. She said the organization wants to change that attitude.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined the Pendletons at Friday’s event and spoke about programs and jobs to help kids stay busy during the summer.

Hadiya, an honor student, was shot and killed days after attending President Barack Obama’s inauguration with her high school band. Two men have been charged in her death.
