Ex-Federal Prosecutor Testifies At Chicago Trial

CHICAGO (AP) — One of the country’s best known former federal prosecutors has taken the witness stand in the Chicago trial of a woman accused of filing bogus liens against him and others.

The long-time U.S. attorney for northern Illinois, Patrick Fitzgerald, told the federal trial Tuesday that he doesn’t owe a convicted drug dealer $100 billion.

The testimony came in the trial of Cherron Phillips. She’s a self-proclaimed adherent of the “sovereign citizen” movement, which doesn’t recognize federal authority.

Phillips is charged with abusing the court system by filing bogus liens against Fitzgerald and 11 others. After her 2012 arrest, a judge entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Phillips allegedly targeted Fitzgerald as revenge for a 2009 conviction of her brother.
