Highway Union Contract Reviewed

Details continue to remain short on a contract between Knox County and the County Highway Department union.

A special meeting was held last night among members of the County’s Highway Department Committee to review the proposed contract. The deal is said to last for a period of two years. Negotiations on the contract have been ongoing since July of 2013.

Changes between the previous agreement and the newly proposed contract were not immediately available, although documents summarizing the changes were present at yesterday’s meeting.

Committee Chair Paul Stewart tells WGIL there were some questions by the committee.

“In the final analysis, a majority of all the committee members present felt that they would like to recommend that the full Board approve this contract,” says Stewart.

Members of the Highway Department’s Local 538 union recently circulated a letter accusing the County of being opposed to saving money. The complaint was derived from potential health insurance options that may be included in the contract.

When asked about the health insurance, Highway Commissioner Duane Ratterman said he had no comment on the situation.

The contract will now be reviewed by members of the full Knox County Board later this month.
