Free Lunch Proposed for Galesburg Students

205logobwStudents in Galesburg’s elementary schools and at least one of the two middle schools could end up getting to have hot lunch for free during the school year if the Galesburg School Board so approves tonight.  The District-205 Board is being asked this evening to vote on a proposal to sign the district up for a four-year agreement in the federal “Community Eligibility Provision.”

District documents indicate that under the program, students in the schools in question have to have at least 63 percent of students at or below the poverty rate, verified through what they call a direct certification, instead of through self-reporting like through the used of free or reduced lunch forms.

The district says based on their calculations, the schools that would fall under those guidelines are Steele, King, Nielson, and Lombard schools.

The average of those four schools, the district says, was greater than the 63-percent threshold.

Free lunch would begin in the coming school year if approved.

The District-205 Board will also hold public hearings tonight on the amended budget for the just-ended school year, when they convene starting at 6:40 tonight at Lincoln School.
