Unemployment Up in One Respect, Down in Another

help wantedThe State of Illinois says statistics indicate unemployment rates have declined across Illinois for the second consecutive month. However, that’s year-to-year. Month-to-month tells a different story locally.

Statistics supplied by the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicates the May jobless average for Knox County is at an even 7%. While that is down a full percentage point from May of last year, the rate is a half-percent higher than the April figure.

In the City of Galesburg, that jobless figure is also down a half percent month-to-month, sitting currently at 7.3%. The Galesburg figure is nine-tenths of a percent lower than May of 2013.

With a Warren County unemployment rate that also rose monthly to 6.1%, that puts the Galesburg-area Unemployment average of 6.7%.

Most other area counties saw what could be described as slight unemployment rate increases month to month.  Stark County’s declined seven-tenths of a percent to 7.5%.

Fulton County’s unemployment rate also declined slightly on a monthly basis, to 8.2%.

The good news according to the state is that on a yearly basis, unemployment rates are at six-year lows in 99 of 102 Illinois counties.

The figures are not seasonally-adjusted.
