Remap Group Withdraws Petitions After Ruling

CHICAGO (AP) — A group pushing a new way to draw political boundaries will inform the Illinois State Board of Elections that it’s scrapping efforts for the November ballot after a judge’s ruling.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva ruled Friday that the signature-driven measure didn’t meet constitutional requirements for the ballot. She ruled the same for another term limits effort.

But the remap group faced other problems. An early sampling of signatures turned over to election officials had many invalid entries.

The group had been trying to rehabilitate signatures and was given leeway earlier this month. The group announced Friday afternoon that they were scrapping efforts.

Elections executive director Rupert Borgsmiller says the judge’s ruling had put the process on hold and could only restart if the group appealed.
