From a flea market to basketball, people lined Main to take in all the activities yesterday. Among them was an event making a return to the festival.
A three-on-three basketball tournament was organized by the Costa Catholic Academy Friars. Organizer Jack Templeton says 20 teams participated in the tournament — lower than the hundreds that used to come in during the tourney’s heyday, but a turnout Templeton says is pretty good for a comeback.
Templeton tells WGIL, however, it wasn’t an easy tournament to pull off.
“It was presented to us a little bit late,” Templeton said. “We had a late start with it. For as many things as we’re competing against [Saturday] — with time, with travel baseball and travel basketball — we’re happy with the turnout.”
Templeton tells WGIL nevertheless, it was an opportunity Costa couldn’t say no to.
“It helps get Costa — our name — out,” Templeton said. “It’s a fundraiser for our Friars Club. We’re just glad to be actually involved with promoting Galesburg basketball again.”
Proceeds from the tournament are helping Costa’s athletic programs, including buying uniforms, basketballs, and other equipment.
