Congresswoman Hosts Meeting on New Digital Lab

7-2-14 BustosWhat a local Congresswoman calls the “second industrial revolution” is upon us, and she says she wants the public — and especially government and industry — to be ready.

17th District Democrat Cheri Bustos hosted a forum in Moline at Western Illinois University today about the Defense Department’s new Digital Manufacturing Design Innovation Institute. It’s designed to allow research and development of technology that they say can make manufacturing better and more cost efficient, and share that data among groups that want it.

Naresh Shah is Senior Director of Operations for the Chicago-based “Design Lab,” and tells WGIL many groups need to come together to make the organization successful.

“We can’t do that successfully without engaging the ecosystem of manufacturers, teaching universities, and economic development organizations that surround us, so my goal is to make sure people are aware of the institute and make sure people are aware of our functions,” says Shah.

The over three-hundred million dollar partnership relies on government and business to join as members in order to be a part of the institute, and Shah says education as well as other sectors will also benefit.
