JOLIET Ill. (AP)–A judge has sentenced a Plainfield woman to 52 years in prison for shooting her former boyfriend to death in 2007.
Gabriela Escutia was convicted in March of first-degree murder in the death of Javier Barrios. The 25-year-old could have faced life in prison. The Will County State’s Attorney’s office says a judge on Tuesday sentenced her to 52 years.
Another man, Ricardo Gutierrez, has been sentenced to 68 years in prison in the case. Officials say Escutia shot Barrios in the side before he fled and was chased by Gutierrez, who shot Barrios twice in the head.
Escutia’s lawyers argued she shot Barrios because he beat her.
