Oquawka Mayor Asks For Help to Sandbag Levee

The heavy storms that came through the area in June have left many counties along the Mississippi river in limbo waiting to see if the river will breech any levees.

Places like Keithsburg, Gladstone, Brulington and Oquawka are still under a flood warning until further notice from the National Weather Service. Now Oquawka’s Mayor Sandra Moody is asking anyone who’s able to come out and lend a hand sandbagging.

Moody tells WGIL they’re asking people to come with shovels to fill bags and help keep the levee reinforced.

“We have to secure the base of the levy and then in the previous three entrances, and then there’s a well has to be fortified so they’re looking for sandbaggers for that, mostly to strengthen what we already have,” says Moody.

Moody says people have been out sandbagging non-stop so if you’re interested in helping, you can find them at the levee across from the Oquawka Diner. You’re being asked to bring a shovel.

At this point Moody says she thinks they’re about a day ahead of places such as Keithsburg, and they want to keep that momentum.

Volunteers are also needed in Keithsburg and can go to the Keithsburg fire station to help.
