Not Guilty Plea in Felony Sex Case

7-29-14 William HickmanA Galesburg man has entered a not guilty plea to felony charges accusing him of sexually assaulting a young girl — prosecutors say — within the last year.

53-year-old William Hickman, Senior entered the not guilty plea yesterday through his public defender, to charges of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child.

Galesburg Police Detective Kevin Legate testified yesterday that the now-nine-year-old girl told police and the Knox County Child Advocacy Center the she was inappropriately fondled by Hickman on several occasions between February of last year, and June of this year.  Legate says the girl also claims that Hickman forced the girl to perform sexual acts on him.

The mother, Legate says, first reported the allegations to police. Legate claims Hickman was once in a relationship with the mother.

Judge Scott Shipplett set a pre-trial hearing in the case for October sixth, with a potential trial date around October 20th.

Hickman remains jailed on $250,000 bond. Public Defender Jim Harrell says he reserves the right to have a hearing scheduled on a motion to reduce that bond at a later date.
