YMCA to Partner with Knoxville Schools

There will be more than just Knoxville High School students using the newly-constructed facilities when they open up in the fall.

The Knoxville School Board recently okayed an agreement with the Knox County YMCA that will essentially allow the new High School and its gym facilities to be used by the “Y” once legal details are officially worked out.

District 202 Superintendent Steve Wilder tells WGIL “Y” members should be able to get some of the benefits of the district’s athletic facilities.

“There’s a wellness room that’s got some fitness equipment in it as well as a weight room that are located on the far west side of the building,” says Wilder. “So there’s an exterior door there where residents will be able to enter in, the YMCA will staff that room, before school and after school, so they’ll take care of checking people in and administering programs.”

Wilder says he and the school board discussed from the very beginning how the new high school can be used by the general public outside of school hours, and what he says will be like renting the space to the “Y” will be the best option.

He says it should give “Y” members like him an alternative to traveling all the way to Carl Sandburg Drive every day to work out.
