Galesburg Celebrates Farmers Markets

8-9-14 Farmers MarketThe organizer of an every Saturday event in Galesburg for about half the year says the event continues to grow in participation, as well as in visitors.

The Downtown Galesburg Farmers Market yesterday celebrated National Farmers Market Week. In addition to roughly two-dozen vendors selling their home-made and home-grown goods, there were some special activities including face-painting for kids, a book signing, massages, and other things.

Kathy Bennett organizes the Farmers Market, and tells WGIL she’d like to see the market grow even more.

“A lot of it is getting the word out to the community that we have a farmers market,” Bennett said.  “It’s unfortunate, but there are a lot of people that still don’t know Galesburg has a farmers market, and what’s even offered down here on a weekly basis.”

The farmers market is Saturday mornings until November first this year. It’s in the city parking lot next to “The Continental” on Simmons Street.

State Representative Don Moffitt visited yesterday, and told the crowd farmers markets are important to the economy.

“Our farmers markets provide a little extra income for producers, and that money stays in our local communities,” Moffitt said.  “Farmers markets provide us all with fresh, delicious, healthy, affordable, nutrition and a reliable source of food.”

Moffitt described farmers markets as helping fill a niche in every community.
