Right On Red Comes To Vote

Traffic flow may be helped with a plan to allow right turns on red lights on a portion of East Main Street in Galesburg.

The Galesburg City Council considered the proposal at their meeting two weeks ago, but the measure will likely be voted on Monday night.

Intersections affected include East Main Street from Cherry to Seminary Streets.

The ordinance comes with the recommendation of the City’s Traffic Advisory Commission.

Although the Illinois Department of Transportation has jurisdiction over the matter, officials say they intend to go along with the City of Galesburg’s solution.

Allowing right-on-red turns is considered acceptable if the intersections display sufficient vision, and don’t include heavy pedestrian traffic.

Reported accidents must be fewer than three over a multi-year period.

According to City documents, the accidents reported at those intersections all came during left hand turns.

Monday night’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Galesburg City Hall.
