Champaign Coroner IDs Train Collision Victim

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — The Champaign County coroner has identified a woman killed when her car and a train collided northwest of Champaign.

The News-Gazette reports coroner Duane Northrup says 52-year-old Diane M. Siewert was pronounced dead early Monday at the scene of the crash.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Mills says a passerby did not see the accident but called police after spotting a car that had rolled over. Deputies believe the collision happened 30 to 60 minutes earlier. The car was destroyed.

Mills says the initial investigation shows Siewert’s car hit a passing train. It’s not clear if the train’s driver knew about the collision. There are no crossing arms or lights where it happened.

The tracks belong to Norfolk Southern.
