With the announcement the current Knox County Chief Public Defender Jim Harrell was retiring, the search for a new Chief Public Defender began.
During a meeting of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court judges last week, by unanimous vote current Assistant States attorney Dave Hansen was appointed to the position.
Hansen, who’s been with the State’s Attorney’s office since 2011 tells WGIL there are some major changes coming to the Public Defender’s office and he wanted to help implement those changes.
“Consolidating it so it’s office of the Public Defender and such and with those changes, I was just excited with those changes,” Hansen said. “Judge [Scott] Shipplett is behind them, and it’s going to kind of be a new thing for us. My background as an Assistant State’s Attorney working at the courthouse since 2011, it was a great opportunity to go ahead and be at the top of some of the changes that are going on.”
Hansen starts in the new job December first, and says he’s looking forward to the new job.
He says he loves working in the courthouse and he really looks forward to the new challenges that are coming with the changes.
