Moline Has 6 Months to Find New Site for Depot

MOLINE, Ill. (AP)–Preservation advocates have been given just over six months to save a 114-year-old train depot in Moline from demolition. The city administrator said Wednesday that the Illinois Department of Transportation has set a May 1 deadline for those who hope to preserve the depot by finding it a new home.

The  Dispatch reports the department plans to buy the Davenport, Rock Island and Northwestern Depot from the city because it’s in the path of an upcoming Interstate 74 project. It also agreed to pay more than $1.3 million to move the depot to a different location.

Although construction is scheduled to begin in 2017, the state needs time to approve the new site and prepare to move the building.

The city administrator says he plans to ask IDOT for an extension if a location hasn’t been identified by May.
