PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A southwestern Illinois woman who helped decorate the White House for Christmas says the experience was on her bucket list for years.
Nauvoo resident Marty Hopp tells the Peoria Journal Star she felt honored to be assigned to decorate a tree honoring fallen soldiers.
She helped visitors who’d lost loved ones in wars hang gold star ornaments on the tree.
She says it was a powerful experience because her grandson is a veteran who served two tours in Iraq.
Hopp, who grew up in Peoria, says her son helped her apply for the decorating committee.
She traveled to Washington the day before Thanksgiving to join other volunteers.
The White House website says volunteers from 34 states and the District of Columbia helped decorate for the holidays.
