Money for Court Reporters in IL May Run Out Next Month

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office says Illinois will run out of money to pay court reporters at the end of March but that the governor is looking for a “responsible solution to the problem.”

Lake County Chief Judge John T. Phillips tells the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald that if the money isn’t found it will create “havoc” because the legal system depends on the reporters to take down what’s said during court proceedings.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly says the court reporter program is $14.3 million short for the budget year that ends June 30.

The paper reports that the director of Court Reporting Services for Illinois has told employees that there is optimism that the problem will be solved.
