Aldermen voted unanimously tonight to approve the rezoning of several properties in the 1200 block of North Henderson Street, so that they can be purchased by a development company planning to turn half of the former EconoFoods store into a Slumberland Furniture. The development company is tied to Slumberland’s owners.
The company plans to make interior and exterior upgrades to the EconoFoods building, use half for the store, and lease out the other half. Other exterior facade upgrades will be made to the rest of the complex, including Dollar General and Big Lots. Those two stores, along with Illinois Title Loans, are expected to continue as tenants.
Construction is expected to begin in the spring and be complete by the end of Summer. Slumberland, however, has not yet set an opening date. Around 20 jobs are expected to be created as a result of the opening.
As has been the case with other developments, First Ward Ald. Ken Goad welcomed the company to Galesburg, and thanked them for being here. Discussion otherwise was minimal.
Aldermen Wayne Dennis and Jeremy Karlin were absent.
